Essentially paintless dent repair (or removal) is the removal of a dent by applying pressure to the back side of the panel, forcing it back to its original level. This is achieved without harming the paint, making it faster and cheaper than conventional body repairs. This type of repair MUST be done by a professional. If you don't know what your doing, serious damage can be done. Frequently inexperienced technicians make costly mistakes as well. Make sure that you're dealing with an experienced repair person. Once damage has been done, it cannot be repaired with PDR.
What type of dents can be repaired with PDR?
It is important to understand that Paintless Dent Repair is not a fix-all. For the most part, only minor dings, dents and creases can be repaired. However, even a small ding can be unrepairable if it is in a bad location (please see our Difficult Repair Spots page). This is perhaps the most frustrating part of Paintless Dent Repair, it only takes a fraction of an inch to make a difference as to whether or not a tech can even get to a ding. There are countless ways to be obstructed, the most common is simply the bracing in the car. Newer and smaller tools are being made to address this problem, however, there will always be ones that simply cannot be repaired. Perhaps the second biggest dent repair spoiler is the depth of the dent. If there is a sharp puncture type ding it can make the repair impossible. This is due to the fact that the metal simply cannot be stretched back, and without causing further harm to the already stressed paint.
